Secret Service Officer Shot at Close Range During Alleged Assassination Attempt at DC Hotel
A Secret Service officer was shot at point-blank range while protecting President Donald Trump during a chaotic scene at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, according to Secret Service Director Sean Curran. The shooting unfolded as high-ranking government officials gathered for the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, a major political and media event.
Curran stated that the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen, allegedly fired a shotgun directly at the officer’s chest. The blast struck the officer’s bulletproof vest — protective equipment that likely saved his life. Despite being hit at extremely close range, the officer reportedly returned fire, discharging five rounds while under immediate threat.
“Our officer was shot point-blank in the chest and still managed to respond,” Curran said, describing the response as evidence of rigorous training and preparedness.
Violence erupted when Allen allegedly stormed through the security perimeter inside the hotel. According to officials, he descended a staircase, moved through a hallway separated by double doors, and then rushed toward a security checkpoint staffed by Secret Service and Transportation Security Administration personnel.
The magnetometer screening area he approached was located nearly 355 feet from the event’s main podium. Agents can be seen in surveillance images reacting quickly as the suspect sprinted toward them. In response, officers began dismantling equipment to clear space and drew their weapons as Allen charged forward.
Authorities say Allen was holding a Mossberg 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, gripping it with both hands and firing one shot in the direction of the stairs. Images captured during the incident show several muzzle flashes as agents responded to neutralize the threat. A plainclothes security officer was also seen drawing a firearm as panic spread through the area.
The dinner was attended by prominent public officials, including the president, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior government leaders. The presence of so many elected officials underscores the seriousness of the alleged attack and the potential consequences had the suspect breached the inner security zone.
According to Curran, the confrontation ended when Allen appeared to injure his knee during the exchange and fell near one of the magnetometers. Officers quickly subdued him. Photographs later showed Allen shirtless on the ground; officials explained that officers removed his outer clothing, including what appeared to be a tactical vest, to ensure he was not carrying additional weapons or explosive devices.
President Trump addressed the shooting on Thursday, emphasizing that the officer’s injury was not the result of friendly fire.
Allen now faces multiple federal charges, including attempting to assassinate the president, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and transporting a firearm across state lines. Federal prosecutors have indicated that additional charges could be forthcoming.
After being arraigned earlier this week, Allen returned to federal court for a detention hearing. He did not oppose the Justice Department’s request to keep him in custody while the case moves forward, though his defense team asked the judge to ease a 24-hour jail lockdown.
This latest outbreak of political violence is a sobering reminder of the ongoing threats facing public servants and the broader crisis of gun violence in America. While the investigation continues, the incident highlights both the life-saving role of public safety workers and the urgent national conversation about how extremist violence and easy access to powerful firearms put communities — and democracy itself — at risk.
- The officer survived after being struck in a protective vest.
- The suspect was apprehended at the scene and remains in federal custody.
- Federal prosecutors have signaled that additional charges may follow.
As the legal process unfolds, questions remain about how such a close-range attack was possible and what further steps may be necessary to safeguard public safety without compromising democratic freedoms. The episode has once again forced the country to confront the dangers of political violence — and the human cost borne by those tasked with protecting elected leaders.
