Georgia Educator Arrested Amid Disturbing Allegations of Sexual Misconduct
A Georgia high school teacher is facing serious felony charges after authorities accused her of engaging in sexual misconduct with a student — a profound violation of trust that has shaken a local school community.
Maris Nichols, 25, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Douglas County Jail on two felony counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory or disciplinary authority. The charges stem from allegations that Nichols, who worked at Alexander High School, had sexual contact with a student on two separate occasions.
According to investigators, one incident allegedly took place April 23 inside a school closet, while another reportedly occurred May 2 in a Hummer parked in a residential driveway. Law enforcement officials have not released additional details about the student involved.
Under Georgia law, educators and other authority figures can face felony charges when accused of engaging in sexual relationships with students, regardless of the student’s age, due to the inherent power imbalance. “Upon learning of the alleged misconduct, the district immediately launched an investigation,” the letter stated, adding that the school system would fully cooperate with state and local law enforcement.
The district has not publicly confirmed Nichols’ current employment status. Earlier in the week, officials announced that an unidentified female teacher had been placed on leave pending an investigation, though they did not release additional details at the time.
