The fiancé of a New Jersey social media influencer who died while vacationing in Zanzibar is speaking publicly for the first time, as unanswered questions continue to surround her tragic death and the handling of the investigation overseas.
Ashly Robinson — known to her 145,000 Instagram followers as Ashlee Jenae — had traveled to the East African island to celebrate her 31st birthday. The trip became an engagement celebration after her boyfriend, Joe McCann, proposed. Days later, Robinson was dead.
Authorities in Tanzania ruled her death a suicide, stating she attempted to hang herself from a hotel room door on April 9 and later died at a local hospital. But her family has forcefully challenged that conclusion, describing her as joyful and full of life — a young woman excited for her birthday getaway and her future.
A Fiancé’s Public Grief
McCann, whose passport was seized by Zanzibar officials during the investigation, released a lengthy statement expressing profound grief.
“There are no adequate words to describe the total devastation, emptiness, and shock I feel after losing my best friend, confidante and fiancé,” he wrote, calling Robinson’s death an “incomprehensible tragedy.”
He described Robinson as compassionate, generous, and deeply caring — someone whose warmth extended beyond her online presence. To him, he said, she was more than a charismatic influencer; she was a partner and source of steady love.
The statement was shared the same day Robinson’s family laid her to rest in New Jersey. According to reports, McCann was not invited to attend the funeral.
Family Demands Transparency
From the beginning, Robinson’s parents have called for greater transparency and accountability. They have publicly disputed authorities’ conclusion that their daughter died by suicide, saying the characterization does not align with who she was or the excitement she felt about her newly engaged life.
“She was a beacon of light,” her parents previously said. “A happy, go-lucky girl.”
The family has also raised concerns about communication in the critical hours after Robinson was hospitalized. They allege McCann waited roughly 11 hours before contacting them, and then only informed them she had died. Since her passing, they say, they have had no contact with him — a silence they describe as troubling.
Compounding their pain is the distance and confusion surrounding an international investigation. Robinson’s remains were eventually returned home, but some of her personal belongings — including her engagement ring — have not yet been released to the family. Her father has indicated authorities may still be holding these items as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Tanzanian police previously stated Robinson’s death followed what they described as a “misunderstanding” between the couple, adding that hotel staff separated them by placing McCann in a different room “for their safety.” Officials have also said McCann was questioned and that his passport was suspended as part of the probe.
However, according to reporting from international outlets, McCann is considered a witness and has not been accused of any wrongdoing. The exact status of his passport — and whether he has since returned to the United States — remains unclear.
