Brutal Bar Assault Kills Young Chicago Father, Community Demands Justice

Young Chicago Father Killed in Early Morning Attack as Community Demands Justice

A 25-year-old Chicago father expecting his second child has died after a brutal early morning assault outside an Avondale neighborhood bar, leaving a grieving family and a shaken community searching for answers.

Alexander “Xander” Kazanowski was discovered unresponsive around 3:20 a.m. on March 24 with severe head injuries near the bar. He was rushed to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to Chicago police.

Authorities have launched a homicide investigation and are seeking to question four people identified as persons of interest in connection with the attack. Police released surveillance footage showing the individuals entering the bar, Tune-Up, on the night of the incident. It remains unclear whether the footage was recorded before or after the assault.

A Life Cut Short

Kazanowski was more than a headline or a statistic. He was a father to a young daughter, Thea, and was eagerly awaiting the birth of his son, John. Friends and family describe a driven and energetic young man who wore many hats: entrepreneur, actor, model, and mentor.

Raised in South Barrington, Illinois, he was a wrestler through his school years and went on to found his own company, Wurk Services, at just 19 years old. Those closest to him say he approached life with determination and intensity.

“Xander’s story is not defined by the years he was given, but by the vigor with which he filled them,” his obituary reads. “As an organ donor, he saved multiple lives and helped countless others move closer to the miracle of a second chance.”

Even in death, Kazanowski gave back — a final act of generosity that underscores the human cost of violence in our communities.

Investigation Ongoing

According to reports, Kazanowski had allegedly been asked to leave the bar earlier that evening due to comments he made. What happened next remains under investigation.

The four individuals police are seeking to question include three men and one woman. Investigators have released clothing descriptions in hopes that community members may recognize them. Cook County Crime Stoppers has announced a $10,000 reward for information that leads to arrests.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. Tipsters can contact Grand Central Area detectives directly or submit anonymous information through Crime Stoppers.

A Community Grapples With Violence

This tragedy adds to the broader crisis of violence that continues to impact families across Chicago and the nation. Every life lost represents not only personal devastation but also systemic failures that demand collective action — from strengthening violence prevention programs to investing in neighborhood safety and community-based solutions.

No family should have to prepare for a new child while planning a funeral. No child should grow up without a parent because of senseless brutality.

As the investigation unfolds, Kazanowski’s loved ones are left to mourn a father, partner, son, and friend whose future was filled with promise. The Avondale community, meanwhile, is demanding accountability and justice — not only to honor one young man’s life, but to reaffirm the basic democratic principle that everyone deserves to live free from violence.

Anyone with information is encouraged to help investigators as they work to bring answers to a grieving family and to uphold the shared responsibility of keeping our neighborhoods safe for all.
