Florida Teen Reports Armed Chase in Local Park as Authorities Make Arrest
A frightening encounter in a Polk County park has left a Florida community shaken after an 18-year-old reported being chased by two men, one allegedly armed with a knife. Authorities say a 23-year-old man, identified as Vidal Jimenez, was arrested Tuesday, March 24, and now faces multiple felony charges in connection with the incident.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call from Bailey Place, where the teenager told officers he had been approached by two individuals who asked if he was selling marijuana. When he said he was not, the situation allegedly escalated. Investigators say Jimenez struck the teen, prompting him to flee.
The teen told authorities he ran into a nearby park to escape. He called his brother for help while hiding, but the two were initially unable to locate each other. Deputies say the suspects found the teen again inside the park and resumed chasing him. Investigators allege that Jimenez was carrying a knife, while the second individual had a bottle in hand.
The young man ultimately managed to reconnect with his brother, and together they contacted law enforcement. Deputies said they later spotted Jimenez leaving the Willow Oak Mobile Home Park. When officers attempted to detain him, authorities allege that he ran, leading a deputy to deploy a Taser before taking him into custody.
Jimenez has been charged with:
- Two counts of aggravated assault without intent to kill
- Simple battery
- Resisting an officer without violence
Officials also confirmed that each charge was elevated by one degree because Jimenez is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. Law enforcement representatives have not publicly explained the legal rationale in detail, but advocates have long raised concerns about the fairness and consistency of sentence enhancements tied to immigration status.
"This suspect assaulted a young man, armed himself, and then tried to outrun deputies," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement, also noting the suspect’s immigration status.
Authorities are continuing to search for the second person allegedly involved in the incident. As of now, that individual has not been identified publicly.
Balancing Public Safety and Fairness
The incident underscores two urgent realities: communities deserve to feel safe in their public spaces, and every person accused of a crime is entitled to due process under the law. While serious allegations of violence must be addressed swiftly and thoroughly, immigrant rights advocates caution against rhetoric that paints entire communities with a broad brush.

Public officials have a responsibility to pursue accountability in individual cases without fueling harmful narratives that stigmatize millions of immigrant families who contribute to American society every day. Polk County authorities have not yet announced whether federal immigration enforcement will place a detainer on Jimenez.
As this case proceeds through the legal system, the focus will remain on determining the facts and ensuring justice for the young man who reported the attack. At the same time, community leaders and advocates stress the importance of centering safety, fairness, and equal treatment under the law — values that form the backbone of a truly democratic society.
The investigation remains ongoing as deputies work to identify and locate the second suspect.
